Mustang logo is adored by all auto fans from all over the world. It can be recognized anywhere. However, very few people know the origin of one of the most popular badges in the history of sports cars. At the same time even less people know how running horse inspired Phillip Thomas Clark to design Mustang logo.

The idea of creation sports car came up to Ford in 1962. We all know that the car was firstly introduced in 1964 and production line was launched one year later. Phillip Thomas Clark was 27 years old when he was asked to design a logo for a new car. He used to work in GMC but left the company to join Ford. He was very excited about new concept that was about to be produced. It was expected to be one of the most powerful and at the same time stylish cars in the world. The image of pony appeared only after 100 days of hard designer work. Before the badge was firstly introduced it was redesigned and modified for several times. Clark was famous for sketching different animals. He made some drawing for local cafes and other establishments. But this time he needed to create something which represented both the name of the new model as well as its American spirit. There are lots of rumors and debates regarding the fact why a horse on Mustang logo gallops to the left. Well, the answer to this question is rather easy.

The Shelby Mustang is a high performance variant of the Ford Mustang which was built by Shelby from 1965 to 1968, and from 1969 to 1970 by Ford. Following the introduction of the fifth generation Ford Mustang in 2005, the Shelby nameplate was revived as a new high-performance model, this time designed and built by Ford.

There were dozens of different variants of the badge where the horse runs in both directions. Some people say that final version with left direction resulted in the fact that Clark was right-handed and it was easier for him to draw an animal galloping in that direction. But we do not know for sure. What we know for sure is that final wooden sculpture of world’s popular pony was created by Charles Keresztes’ and presented in 1963. It was based on Clark’s sketch. Later Mustang logo was modified and changed for several times in the history of this model. However the last version of the badge appeared in 2010. The horse got its crisper and more muscular look.
