Holy Grail LS6 Chevrolet Chevelle Discovered In Barn After 43 Years!

For muscle car enthusiasts, finding a rare muscle in a barn is like winning the lottery. I want to experience it, too!

Holy Grail LS6 Chevrolet Chevelle Discovered In Barn After 43 Years!

We've heard some great stories about people who've found classic cars in barns, but this one's popular. To think that a 1970 LS6 Chevelle was found after 43 years and in more-than-perfect condition -- must be a dream for any classic car enthusiast. This particular LS6 is a rare gem and worth a look.

So what makes this Chevelle so special? It's not one of those mundane 1970 Chevys that Chevrolet built in huge numbers. It isn't even an SS 396, which is plenty desirable thanks to its 330-horsepower V8. Nope, this coupe is the ultimate 1970 Chevelle, the SS 454 LS6(a rare hardtop model that Chevrolet built in very small numbers).

Offered for only one model year, Chevrolet offered a bundle for the already-potent Chevelle that turned it into a massively powerful beast. The package included a 454-cubic-inch (7.4-liter) big-block LS6 engine that produced 450 horsepower and 500 pound-feet (678 Nm) of torque.

You'll be impressed to learn that the Chevelle LS6 made more oomph than the mighty 426-cubic-inch (7.0-liter) HEMI, rated at 425 horses and 490 pound-feet (664 Nm) of twist. That's an extra 25 horses and an additional 10 pound-feet of torque, enough to make the Chevelle LS6 one of the most powerful engines of 1970.

But even though it was impressive, the LS6 option was also quite expensive, and high-performance muscle cars came with high insurance rates. Thus, only 4,475 Chevelles had the LS6 engine. There are no records as to how many of those were Chevelle coupes, though most experts agree that Chevrolet sold around 3,300 of them in 1970. That's less than one percent of total Chevelle production that year.

So, what's the story of this barn-found LS6? After only nine years on the road, this muscle car was retired from service in 1979. There's no info as to why that happened, but it has remained in storage ever since. The car was moved into the current barn sometime in 1986 and has remained there since—43 years later, as of 2022.

Amazingly, this Chevy Chevelle is still in solid condition and has no rust issues to contend with. And while the original paint is no longer on the car, this Chevy still rocks its original LS6 V8, automatic gearbox, and Posi rear end. The original carburetor is still under the hood as well!

After spending 36 years hidden away in a barn, this restored LS6 is about to see the light of day. So the owner called Chevelle expert Patrick Glenn Nichols for advice on how to restore it. And needless to say, it's a perfect candidate for a frame-off restoration, which should turn it into a Concours-winning classic. I look forward to it!

Thanks to the YouTuber by the name of " Patrick Glenn Nichols Musclecar Barn Finds," who uploaded a video of this car on 25 Jun 2022, we get to see this classic Chevrolet abandoned 43 years ago, dusty and unscathed.
