7 Sports Cars That Are Better Value For Money Than 2022 Mustang GT

The 2022 Ford Mustang GT has plenty of performance for most enthusiasts' needs, but it's not the most thrilling car in its price range.

Sports Cars That Are Better Value For Money Than 2022 Mustang GT

Don’t misunderstand us: The 2022 Mustang GT is not a bad car, and diehard fans will be in heaven. It's quick, reasonably comfortable, and offers the latest tech features drivers have come to expect from their pony cars. However, the Mustang GT is not perfect, and in fact, the Chevrolet Corvette C8, a far more driver-focused and sportier muscle car, is a better value. So while we love what Ford has done with the new Mustang GT, it just doesn't beat out the Corvette C8 as the best sports car for the money on our list.

Some people will tell you to get a Ford Mustang. There are lots of reasons you can buy a Mustang, and they're all good, but unless you're a brand loyalist or an enthusiast who enjoys the nostalgia that comes with it, you might be lacking a few “must-have” features and creature comforts. So what are better alternatives than the Mustang?

In 2022, you'll likely have a sports car that looks good and feels even better—at the price range. With a little research and some negotiation skills, it's not impossible to get yourself behind the wheel.

Here are a few sports cars we feel would be better alternatives to the Mustang GT in terms of price versus performance.

1Chevrolet Corvette C8

Chevrolet Corvette C8

When General Motors announced that the engine in their new Corvette would be placed in the middle of the car's frame instead of under its hood, like all previous iterations, gearheads were dumbfounded. However, as time showed, this risk was well worth it: The new C8 Corvette has a listed MSRP of around $63,000. However, dealers are marking these baby supercars up, so when looking for one, make sure you're not getting scammed—dealers are selling them for about $10K more than MSRP.

The 2022 Corvette has a mid-mounted 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine that sends 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels only. The result is a sub-3-second 0-60 time and a top speed of almost 185 mph. The model has already proven itself as one of the best and most desirable sports cars in its price range (only slightly more expensive than the Mustang GT). So we'd be crazy not to give it a shot over the Mustang GT.

2BMW M240i

BMW M240i

The M240i is a great car, and you won't be disappointed if you buy it. It's got excellent handling and is as fast as an M2 in some situations. The all-wheel drive makes it faster than the rear-wheel drive M2 on wet roads. In addition, the soft suspension and lighter steering make it easier to use day-to-day, while the cabin is quieter than BMW M2.

The new M240i comes with BMW's rear-biased xDrive system, which handles the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 cylinder with 382 horsepower to allow a 0-60 time in as little as 3.6 seconds without prohibiting you from sliding the tail around corners if you please to do so. So while this BMW costs $50,000, we still would recommend saving up and buying one of these instead of a Mustang GT.

3Mazda MX-5 Miata

Mazda MX-5 Miata

If you've ever driven an MX-5, you might understand why it's one of the most popular sports cars in the world. Not only does this model offer great driving performance at an affordable price, but it's also one of the most thrilling rides around.

For a car weighing under 2000 lbs, this 181-horsepower speedster will handle corners better than any Mustang ever will. It also provides a thrilling 5-second 0-60 mph dash.

4Subaru WRX STI

Subaru WRX STI

The 2020 Subaru WRX STI stays true to its heritage of being an affordable, fun and powerful performance sedan. The 2.5-liter engine has been tweaked for more power than ever before--310 horsepower, which is sent through a six-speed manual to all four wheels for unparalleled stability.

If you're looking for a high-performance car that can handle the road, but not just the track, we think you might like the Subaru WRX better than the Ford Mustang.

5Chevrolet Camaro SS

Chevrolet Camaro SS

Though the Camaro's interior may not be the most modern in this segment, and its exterior redesign may come across as too unappealing for some, the SS has driving dynamics that rival those of its direct competitor, the Mustang GT.

The Camaro SS not only offers the precision and comfort of the Mustang GT, but its 6.2L V8 provides more torque than the Mustang's 5.0L, resulting in a more thrilling ride.

6Toyota Supra GR

Toyota Supra GR

The all-new Toyota Supra offers a level of performance that has never before been seen at the $50,000 price point. Powered by a 335-horsepower BMW-sourced engine, and with a 0-60 time of under 4 seconds, the Supra has the ability to outperform the Mustang in just about every category.

The new Mustang Mach 1 has replaced the Shelby GT350 in order to match its kind of performance, and it costs around $50,000. However, given the Supra's superior handling and better fuel economy (compared to V8 Mustangs), we prefer this Japanese sports car.

7Civic Type R

Civic Type R

The new Civic Type R may be a bit more affordably priced than the Ford Mustang GT, but it's also not as powerful (306 hp vs. 435 hp). Note that it's also solely a front-wheel-drive car. So why on earth would we pick this over a Mustang?

When it comes to straight-line acceleration, the Mustang GT has the Type R beat. But where the Civic really shines is on a winding road. The Type R's steering and handling are so responsive that you'll feel like you're driving on rails. Suppose you want a really fast car with some serious cornering ability, this one's for you. If you want a muscle car that can be driven at high speeds without sacrificing handling performance, go with the Mustang GT.

The Bottom Line

Ultimately, there is no correct answer for which car best replaces the Ford Mustang. It really does come down to personal preferences and what you are looking for in a sports car. But we are certain that at least one of these cars will make a good match for you and your family or friend group.
