According to the Federation of Indian Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), total car sales in 2022 reached 4.725 million vehicles, an increase of 25.7% from 2021. As a result, India's total car sales (units) annual sales surpassed Japan for the first time in history, becoming the third largest car market in the world after China and the United States.

Maruti Suzuki is the most popular local car brand in India. It is a joint venture between the Japanese carmaker Suzuki and the Indian government and has operated since 1981. Maruti Suzuki has a wide range of cars and SUVs that cater to different market segments and is known for its affordable pricing and reliability.

Another popular Indian car brand is Tata, founded in 1945 and is now India's largest automobile manufacturer. The company produces a range of cars, SUVs, and trucks and owns the luxury car brands, Jaguar and Land Rover.
