As reported by the CPCA, Tesla and BYD had still been leaders of the Chinese electric vehicle market by December 31, 2021. At the same time, new competitors appeared to fight against small-scale electric vehicle enterprises, including NIO, Li Xiang (Li Auto), and more.
Data suggest that the economical electric vehicle, Hongguang MINI EV, was the best-selling automobile model in China in 2021, whose sales volume was more than tripling that of 2020 to reach 380,278. Hongguang MINI EV was mainly applied to a short-distance rides. It was followed by Model 3 and Model Y under Tesla, which ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. The most important cause behind the popularity of Model 3 and Model Y is the Chinese worship of Tesla and its minimized design style.
The annual sales volume of BYD electric vehicles in 2021 was 593,745, representing a year-on-year surge of 231.6%. This turned BYD into the largest electric vehicle manufacturer in China. Two electric vehicles manufactured by BYD, Qin Plus, and Han EV, won the favor of a large number of Chinese.
