In the first half of 2022, Toyota remained at the top of global new car sales rankings according to research firm MarkLines. But companies that focus on pure electric vehicles are making their way up the rankings.
Toyota Group's global sales fell 6% year-on-year to 5.13 million vehicles, including Daihatsu's 361,000 and Hino's 78,000. Toyota's Asian market grew by 3%, while sales decreased in North America (-17%) and Japan (-19%).
Second place, Volkswagen Group sales fell 22 percent to 3.87 million vehicles. Compared with Toyota, Volkswagen is more dependent on China's market, which has a big impact on the company's results.
Hyundai Motor Group dropped 7 percent (including Kia Motors) to move into third place. In China, Hyundai's sales have been poor in recent years, but in the international market, Hyundai is very popular. Especially in South Korea, Southeast Asia, and the United States, Hyundai and Kia can match or even exceed the sales of Japanese cars.

Tesla moved from outside the top 20 to No. 17, selling 560,000 vehicles. Chinese automaker BYD Motors sold 640,000 units, moving it to 14th place. While sales of Tesla and BYD cars have expanded dramatically and pure EV companies are gaining a greater presence in new car sales, other traditional automakers are facing a tough situation.
